- Advanced Practice Provider - EMS Assistant Medical Director
Description
Position Summary:
UW Health is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) leadership team as Assistant Medical Director. This position combines clinical practice with educational and operational leadership, offering an opportunity for an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to play a key role in advancing prehospital care throughout the region.
Working under the direction of EMS Medical Director(s) in the Division of Prehospital Medicine, this 0.25 FTE role will initially focus on supporting the Madison Fire Department — a nationally recognized leader in providing emergency services — with the potential to expand as UW Health’s EMS partnerships grow regionally. The APP Assistant Medical Director will assist in the oversight and management of contracted EMS agencies, contributing to chart review, quality improvement, protocol development, and education through simulation, skills training, and didactic sessions.
The remaining 0.75 FTE will be dedicated to clinical practice as an Emergency Medicine APP within the UW Health Emergency Departments.
The Division of Prehospital Medicine works to empower out-of-hospital clinicians to deliver the highest quality, patient-centered care. It advances this mission by strengthening local EMS agencies through specialized training, realistic simulation, quality and patient safety initiatives, data-driven performance improvement, and support for grant-funded research. The division provides primary medical direction for the UW EMS Consortium, a regional coalition dedicated to setting standards for safe, effective prehospital care, which includes Madison Fire Department among its members.
Position Responsibilities:
- Medical Oversight
- Provide online and offline medical oversight under the direction of the Medical Director for Consortium agencies.
- Take on additional oversight responsibilities as additional rural and urban EMS agencies join the Consortium, offering opportunities for broader system-level impact.
- Quality Assurance and Improvement
- Conduct weekly reviews of patient care records from UW EMS Consortium agencies for protocol adherence and quality of care.
- Review and address clinician follow-up requests from the field.
- Participate in QA/QI Committee meetings and assist with the growth of the UW EMS Consortium’s QA/QI program.
- Consortium and Department Meetings
- Attend UW EMS Consortium and DEM Prehospital meetings, which may include:
- UW EMS Consortium Leadership meetings (bimonthly)
- QA/QI Committee meetings (bimonthly)
- Planning sessions for Consortium education and leadership activities
- DEM EMS Operations meetings
- Attend UW EMS Consortium and DEM Prehospital meetings, which may include:
- Field Integration
- Perform ride-alongs with EMS agencies to provide real-time education, feedback, and QA/QI.
- Build strong relationships with frontline providers through direct field engagement.
- Protocol Development
- Assist in the review and development of EMS protocols under the direction of the Medical Director.
- Incorporate updated protocols into provider education and skills training.
- Education and Training
- Provide simulation, hands-on skills training, and didactic sessions for Madison Fire and other UW EMS Consortium agencies.
- Develop and deliver lectures and simulation opportunities that reinforce clinical skills, decision-making, and team communication.
- Expand education delivery as additional EMS agencies join the Consortium.
- Program Development
- Support program evaluation, system compliance, and disaster preparedness activities as directed by EMS Medical Directors.
- Participate in the development of scalable systems for QA/QI, education, and oversight that can be applied across current and future Consortium agencies.
Opportunities for Growth and Impact:
Develop leadership experience in EMS: Serve as an integral member of the UW EMS Consortium leadership team, contributing to decision-making, quality initiatives, and educational strategies across multiple EMS agencies.
Shape system-wide patient care: Help define how prehospital care is delivered through protocol development, QA/QI processes, and evidence-based practice improvements that impact hundreds of EMS professionals and thousands of patients.
Grow alongside an expanding consortium: As additional agencies join the UW EMS Consortium, this role offers opportunities for increased scope, FTE, and leadership responsibilities in education, quality, and clinical oversight.
Bridge hospital and field medicine: Strengthen collaboration between emergency departments and EMS clinicians through field integration, simulation training, and real-time feedback that enhance continuity of care.
Engage in teaching and mentorship: Design and deliver innovative educational experiences — from simulation-based learning to system-wide training events — helping to shape the next generation of EMS providers.
Be part of something new: Help build a scalable, sustainable approach to EMS medical oversight that blends academic rigor, operational excellence, and community impact, further positioning the UW as a leader in EMS education and quality in Wisconsin and beyond.
Clinical Commitment:
This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position consisting of 0.75 FTE clinical practice and 0.25 FTE dedicated to EMS leadership. The clinical portion equates to approximately 1,198.80 annual clinical hours (or about 11 shifts per month) within the UW Health emergency departments. The Department of Emergency Medicine’s APP staffing model incorporates paid time off into the annual clinical requirement, meaning scheduled shifts already account for vacation, holiday, and CME time. This structure ensures consistent shift coverage while supporting work-life balance for our APP team.
Compensation and Benefits:
UW Health total rewards and employee services packages go beyond traditional benefits to help you balance your work and life needs. APPs receive competitive compensation, outstanding health and dental coverage, employer-funded retirement contributions, and annual continuing medical education (CME) funds. Additional benefits include malpractice coverage, wellness resources, and opportunities for professional development and leadership growth.

Interested applicants should submit their CV and a cover letter outlining their relevant prehospital or EMS experience to Jenna Brink, PA, APP Supervisor, at jbrink@uwhealth.org and Megan Gussick, MD, Prehospital Medicine Division Chief, at mgussick@medicine.wisc.edu.
