The Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science in the School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh is inviting applications for a non-tenure track (appointment stream) position in the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning in fall 2026 or earlier. The department is actively expanding its proficiency in the field of health data science, with emphasis on areas including machine learning, artificial intelligence, clinical trials, precision health, mobile health, electronic health records, statistical genetics/genomics, network analysis, imaging data, causal inference, large-scale observational studies, and spatiotemporal statistics as applied to environmental health. Exceptional candidates with other areas of research focus will also be considered.

We are seeking applicants with a Ph.D. degree or equivalent degree in biostatistics, statistics, data science, computer science, bioinformatics, or other related quantitative disciplines. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in both methodological and collaborative applied research, participate in teaching activities, and offer mentorship to students. Created through a unique partnership with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the School of Medicine (https://www.orthonet.pitt.edu/), this position fosters interdisciplinary collaboration at the intersection of biostatistics, data science, and clinical research. We anticipate the candidate to collaborate with faculty from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, providing support in study conceptualization and design, data analysis, manuscript writing, professional presentations, as well as grant application development using rigorous statistical and computational techniques. In addition to this area, potential collaborative opportunities may also extend within and beyond the School of Public Health. Candidates are encouraged to develop an independent research program that builds on collaborative work. Applications are welcome from recent PhD graduates as well as postdoctoral fellows. Candidates for the Associate Professor position should demonstrate a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, proven success in securing and managing external research funding, and experience in teaching and mentoring students.

Established in 1949, the Department of Biostatistics, recently renamed Biostatistics and Health Data Science, was one of the original four departments of the School of Public Health. It consistently maintains its status as a top-tier biostatistics department across the nation and leads the way in data-driven science through innovative methodologies, interdisciplinary collaboration, and impactful education. The department educates the next generation of leaders in biostatistics and health data science by providing opportunities for close interactions with award-winning faculty and practical, real-world training opportunities across a diverse range of research areas. The department hosts vibrant MS and PhD programs. Graduates of our programs hold positions at major academic institutions, government agencies, and prominent industries. The School of Public Health recently launched a new Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH), a four-year program designed to expose students to concepts and experiences necessary for success in the workplace and to further education and lifelong learning in the field of public health. This position will play an important role in teaching and mentoring students.

The department has strong collaborative relationships with many academic and clinical units across the six Health Sciences Schools and beyond. Home to prominent research centers such as NRG Oncology Statistics and Data Management Center, and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Biostatistics Core, the department has major research efforts in chronic diseases, including cancer, mental health, liver diseases, large-scale clinical trials, and the study of health problems specific to urban and industrial environments. Beyond the university, the department also collaborates with UPMC-Pennsylvania's largest academic medical center, private sectors, and local and state government agencies.
