The Opportunity
Howard University College of Medicine seeks an exceptional academic leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The College is undergoing exciting, transformational changes, including the construction of a new, state-of-the-art hospital building and Health Sciences Complex. The next Chair will leverage these investments to drive excellence throughout the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in its clinical practice, education, research, and service to the community.
The Chair is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Department. They will initially focus on building up the department through faculty recruitment and attracting high caliber academic physicians. The Chair will also ensure high quality clinical performance and productivity throughout the department.
Throughout the history of the College, its leaders have made major contributions to modern medicine, underscoring the institution’s deep culture of transformative research. The next Chair will further this legacy, providing faculty mentorship in grantsmanship and fostering research productivity. Reporting to the Dean, the Chair will inspire faculty, staff, students and trainees, ensure the highest standards of care for patients and effective stewardship of department resources.
Key Responsibilities
Teach medical students and residents
Lead and manage the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Ensure effective administration of Department clinical operations, excellent care for its patients, and satisfaction among its faculty, students, staff, and patients
Drive research productivity, providing faculty mentorship in grantsmanship and fostering a culture of scholarship
Recruit, retain, develop, and oversee highly qualified and respected Department faculty and staff
Develop and maintain good relationships with peers, faculty, staff, students and alumni
Support interdisciplinary partnerships throughout the enterprise

The position is located in Washington, D.C. Consistent with a position of this importance, Howard
University will provide the successful candidate with a competitive compensation and benefits package.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be nationally recognized in areas which are consistent with the College of Medicine’s mission to provide exceptional education, clinical service, and research. The Chair will have an M.D., Board Certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and significant academic and clinical practice experience at a leading academic medical center. Their initial focus will be building up the department through faculty recruitment, and prior experience leading through growth and transformation is preferred. A strong track record of research funding and publication is also expected.
In addition to impeccable academic credentials, ideal candidates will have a demonstrated ability to lead in a manner that is inspiring, thoughtful, and reflective of the transformation underway at Howard. A deep respect for the mission of the University as well as HBCUs in general is also of critical importance. Those recognized by their faculty and peers as being collaborative, supportive of their development, and bridge builders would be considered especially strong candidates. A visionary who could continue to build upon the strategic vision of the College of Medicine and implement it throughout the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will also be of interest.
Requirements
Key Requirements
A strong track record of leadership within a recognized academic medical center, with a deep understanding of clinical practice and clinical operations management
Prior experience building an academic unit, or leadership through organizational growth and transformation, is preferred
A demonstrated ability to identify and successfully pursue research funding opportunities, conduct impactful research, and drive a culture of research through mentorship of junior faculty
The ability to recruit, retain, and develop top-tier talent at the national level
The vision, emotional intelligence, communication skills, and administrative acumen to inspire faculty, students, and staff to advance high-quality medical care at Howard University and beyond
Essential Qualifications
M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution
Board certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation Eligible for appointment as Professor or Associate Professor
Licensed or eligible for medical licensure in Washington, D.C.
