Description
The American University of Beirut (AUB) Faculty of Medicine (FM) and Medical Center is seeking a distinguished clinical and academic leader for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology.
The Department of Ophthalmology at AUB-FM is dedicated to delivering patient-centered eye care, comprehensive education, and advanced clinical and translational research. The department provides a wide range of outpatient and inpatient clinical services, covering general ophthalmology as well as subspecialty care, including cornea and refractive surgery, retina and vitreoretinal diseases, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, and ocular oncology.
In addition to providing comprehensive clinical care, the Department plays a central role in medical education by offering elective and selective clerkships for medical students and interns, as well as a fully ACGME-I–accredited Residency Program in Ophthalmology. Depending on needs, the Department also offers postgraduate fellowship programs in Retina and Refractive Surgery, aimed at advanced subspecialty training.
Faculty members are actively engaged in clinical and translational research, with research interests spanning the diagnosis, management, and treatment of a broad spectrum of ocular diseases, contributing to both regional and international ophthalmic research and innovation.
Candidate Requirements
- The ideal candidate for the position of Chairperson should be an accomplished clinical and academic leader. Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Hold a medical degree with subsequent formal clinical training in Ophthalmology, preferably through accredited residency and fellowship programs.
- Have achieved a recognized academic rank, preferably at the level of Associate Professor or Professor.
- Have proven leadership experience with a distinguished record of excellence in clinical practice, education, and research.
- Have demonstrated experience overseeing and advancing the use of state-of-the-art ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical technologies, with the ability to integrate advanced imaging, laser, and microsurgical platforms into high-quality clinical care, education, and research.
- Have exceptional communication, teamwork, administrative, and managerial skills, with a demonstrated ability to mentor faculty and trainees and foster academic growth.

- A letter of intent, including a summary of accomplishments in clinical service, teaching, research, program development, and administrative management.
- For internal applicants: A proposed vision and strategic plan for the Department of Ophthalmology at AUB-FM. For external applicants: The vision and strategic plan may be submitted after visiting the Department and its facilities upon invitation.
