The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) invites applications for a senior academic leader to serve as Chief of GI Medical Oncology. We seek an exceptional physician-scientist or clinical-investigator with a distinguished record of achievement in GI malignancies, including excellence in patient care, impactful scholarship, and a strong commitment to academic mentorship. Candidates should demonstrate successful leadership experience and the capacity to guide a multidisciplinary program within an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Position Overview
UMGCCC, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and nationally ranked program, seeks a leader who will advance a cohesive, academically rigorous GI oncology program. The successful candidate will collaborate across basic science, clinical research, and population science programs to drive innovation, strengthen translational research, and enhance clinical excellence across the University of Maryland Cancer Network.
Appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, however rank and tenure status is dependent on selected candidate's qualifications.
The expected salary range for Associate Professors is $219,549 (min) and $311,615 (max). The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not include all components of the departmental faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental variable compensation programs. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the salary range stated herein. For more information, please contact the hiring department.
The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on the University of Maryland School of Medicine's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical and Program Leadership
- Serve as the lead physician for GI medical oncology
- Provide strategic leadership as Co-Leader of the GI Oncology Disease Group
- Develop and enhance a multidisciplinary GI oncology program that integrates clinical services with research and educational missions
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered care aligned with national best practices
- Work collaboratively with institutional leaders to oversee GI oncology care and ensure adherence to highest quality care and professional standards
- Contribute to institutional governance through committee participation and strategic planning
- Mentor junior faculty, fellows, and early-career investigators
Research Advancement
- Expand the clinical and translational research portfolio in GI malignancies
- Foster collaborative, investigator-initiated trials through engagement with basic science, population science, and Shared Resource leaders
- Partner with UMGCCC Community Outreach and Engagement leadership to ensure research relevance to the cancer center's catchment area
- Compete successfully for NIH, DOD, foundation, and industry-sponsored funding
- Promote dissemination of scientific findings at major national meetings and in high-impact peer-reviewed journals
- Strengthen clinical trial access and accrual at affiliate sites across the UM Cancer Network
Education and Mentorship
- Contribute to teaching and curriculum development for medical students, residents, fellows, and trainees
- Support the professional growth of faculty within the Division of Medical Oncology and across UMGCCC
- Provide consultative expertise and second-opinion evaluations for community partners
- Participate in local, regional, and national educational activities, including CME programming
Qualifications
Qualifications
- M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. (or equivalent)
- Board certification in Medical Oncology (ABIM)
- Eligibility for medical licensure in Maryland
- Evidence of sustained academic productivity, including high-impact publications and extramural research funding
- Documented commitment to advancing inclusiveness and equity in academic medicine
- Participation on NCTN and ETCTN committee and leadership of national cooperative trials
- Experience with faculty recruitment, retention, and career development, and philanthropy is desirable
