Interim Music Director Position
Barrington United Methodist Church (BUMC) in Barrington Hills, IL. seeks an experienced and
collaborative musician who can provide interim leadership for both our 20-member Choir and 3-
person Worship Band during a season of transition. This position also works collaboratively with
the Handbell Choir Director and the Organist. Join our innovative, inclusive Methodist
congregation in leading meaningful worship music that nurtures the spirit and deepens our
connection to God and one another.
Position Details:
Term: Beginning December 2025. While a strategic planning team is actively engaged
in creating a long-term vision for Music Ministries at BUMC, we seek interim leadership,
which will continue until the Director of Music Ministries position is filled. The Interim
Music Director is eligible to apply for the Director role once it is posted.
Compensation: Compensation is competitive with additional compensation for
special services such as Holy Week (if applicable).
Schedule:
Weekly Thursday evening choir rehearsals (7:30 PM - 9:00 PM)
Weekly Sunday services: 8:15 AM - 11:45 AM; 2 services (rehearsals
precede each); Worship Band leads one service, Choir leads the other.
Special services (if applicable): Lent/Holy Week (Ash Wed, Holy Thurs, Good
Friday)
Regular check-ins with Pastor, negotiated with the Pastor (typically by phone)
Supervisor: BUMC Pastor
About Our Chancel Choir:
20-member ensemble dedicated to enhancing worship through music
Passionate about fostering a meaningful and spiritual worship experience
About Our Crossroads Worship Band:
Currently composed of one strong paid singer and one paid drummer. Volunteer
congregants join on guitar periodically.
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
Experience directing church or community choirs (including volunteer choirs)
Strong understanding of Protestant Christian worship traditions
Ability to select appropriate sacred music for worship
Excellent musical and leadership skills
Ability to play keyboards from lead sheets as part of a Worship Band (mentoring may
be possible for someone with limited experience)
Collaborative spirit and strong interpersonal skills
Familiarity with diverse musical styles
