About Us: Borland Free Clinic is a growing faith-based, nonprofit medical clinic in Tualatin, Oregon that offers free medical care and various specialty services to economically disadvantaged, uninsured and underserved, individuals of primarily south metro Portland.
Position Summary: We are seeking a licensed medical provider (MD, DO, PA, NP) to join our team on a half-time basis as the clinic’s first ever paid provider. This position will provide leadership and continuity of care across all of our medical operations.
The right person for this role must be a licensed practitioner, with prescribing authority, in the State of Oregon; have a strong affinity with our mission and purpose; be able to work in a team environment, including with volunteers; and be able to provide quality, compassionate care to patients presenting with a variety of urgent and chronic conditions. The Lead Provider will care for patients, provide oversight to BFC volunteer clinicians, such as providers and nurses, and perform administrative duties, including offering timely responses to patients related to labs, imaging, referrals and prescriptions.
It is expected that the Lead Provider will be regularly present during clinic operational hours. Current hours are: Mondays 3-7 PM, Wednesdays 9 AM - 1 PM, Thursdays 3-7 PM, plus one additional 4-hour clinic to be added in 2026. Additional hours can be completed remotely.
We welcome applicants wishing to split their time between this role and another job, and we especially appreciate applicants who are open to expanding their hours as the clinic grows over time.
This position reports to the Executive Director, while the volunteer Medical Director provides clinical guidance and support as well as performance input, as appropriate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clinical Care
- Obtain complete medical history and physical data on patients during office visit
- Identify health and medical risk factors based on physical exam findings, age, medical history, and social determinants of health
- Identify barriers and treat patients with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity
- Synthesize data and utilize standards of care to determine preliminary diagnosis
- Develop appropriate therapeutic plan for urgent and chronic conditions using cost-effective options for medications, orders and referrals according to patient needs
- Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures and tests
- Provide patient and family education according to healthcare needs to ensure effective self-care
- Provide monitoring and continuity of care of patients between visits
- Processes medication refill requests for patients, with the potential for overseeing the dispensing of medications on-site in the future
- Provide timely review and follow-up for patient lab and imaging reports and respond to patient inquiries
- Review and provide follow-up care and consultation for patient referrals for specialties and procedures BFC does not offer
- If needed and available, provide triage for walk-in patients during clinic hours
- Work independently and as part of a health care team
- Clinical Operations
- Provide clinical expertise, training and support for volunteers and co-workers
- Collaborate with Executive Director, Medical Director, and Clinic Manager to review and update clinical policies and procedures for quality and efficiency
- Oversee functionality and proper use of all in-house lab equipment
- Help implement tools and assessments for desired patient outcomes
- Support staff by providing shadow shifts for interested volunteer clinicians and participating in volunteer providers’ credentialing and privileging process
- Participate in the QARM (Quality Assurance and Risk Management) committee meetings quarterly
- Review volunteer provider charts for completeness, consistency, and accuracy
- Monitor and order medical supplies and review all medical supply donations
- Assist the Executive Director in developing strategies to meet organizational goals
Other Job Functions:
- Record hours worked (weekly)
- Be present during all clinic hours unless otherwise arranged
- Be present for staff meetings (monthly), typically Mondays or Thursdays before clinic
- Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with the Executive Director
- Purchase only expenses approved by the Executive Director
- Maintain workplace confidentiality and discretion
- Represent the clinic publicly and/or at community events, as needed
- Comply with all federal, state, and regulatory requirements
- Adhere by all clinic policies and procedures
- Model a professional, positive image and attitude about the clinic and its work
- Demonstrate and promote a commitment to continued professional development and evidence-based practices
- Establish and maintain understanding of cultural sensitivity to diverse staff and clients
Requirements
Primary Qualifications:
- Have an active, unencumbered license to practice in the State of Oregon
- Hold a DEA license to prescribe medications
- Graduate from an accredited school
- Proficiency in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of conditions
- Experience in clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment skills, especially managing patients with chronic conditions; experience in a primary care setting desirable
- Computer literate, especially in Apple systems, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office
- Experience with an electronic medical records system; Athena preferred
- Exceptional written/verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team (staff, volunteers, Board members)
- Passion for serving BFC’s patient population
- Comfort training, teaching, and coaching others
- Forward thinking and adaptable as BFC develops and grows
- Committed to the mission and values of BFC
- Interest in cultivating community partnerships
- Bilingual (English-Spanish) proficiency a plus but is not required
Working Conditions:
- Part-time schedule (20 hours per week)
- Position requires evening availability two nights per week, and occasional additional availability (mornings, evenings, weekends) for special clinics and events
- Ability to life up to 20 pounds, to sit and stand for extended periods of clinic care as needed, and to manage typical job-related stress in a clinical environment
Compensation:
- $75-80/hour base salary
