Description
The City of Adrian, MI is accepting applications for the position of Parks & Recreation Director. Adrian (adriancity.com) is a city of arts, parks, and culture featuring several collegiate campuses, 17 beautifully maintained parks and the Kiwanis Trail (a 10-mile paved trail stretching from Adrian to Tecumseh). The historic downtown features shops, restaurants, and events, and is located in close proximity to three major metropolitan areas – Toledo, Ann Arbor, and Detroit.
Under the general direction of the City Administrator, the Director plans and oversees the development and maintenance of all city parks, cemetery, and forestry facilities, as well as recreational programs and services. This includes planning, organizing, and directing day-to-day operations in a manner that promotes innovation and continuous improvement. In coordination with Human Resources, the Director is responsible for hiring and evaluating staff, identifying departmental training needs, policy administration, and addressing employee concerns in accordance with labor contract guidelines.
Requirements
Given the City’s collaborative and resource-leveraged approach to recreation delivery, the Director shall exercise strategic leadership marked by creativity, accountability, and clarity of purpose, ensuring recreation services remain accessible, sustainable, and community-responsive through structured partnerships with Adrian Public Schools, regional trail authorities, civic organizations, and private stakeholders.
Candidate will also be accountable for researching and anticipating the needs of the community related to physical parks and recreation programs and services and developing long and short-range goals to provide a complete program of services. This includes preparation and administration of a formal five-year master plan for parks and recreation functions.
Other obligations include preparation and administration of departmental budget, writing and administering grants, responding to community concerns, and promotion of the department and collaboration within the community.
Bachelor’s Degree in recreation administration or a related field, advanced certification or education, and seven or more years’ experience is strongly preferred.
