The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Clinical Lead plays a critical role in improving the communication and quality of life for individuals with complex communication needs while serving as the clinical supervisory lead for speech-language and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) services and staff.

Responsibilities
 

Clinical Leadership & Supervision

• Serve as the clinical supervisory lead for speech-language pathology and AAC services, assuming professional responsibility for supervised services in accordance with ASHA standards and state regulations.
• Provide direct and indirect supervision to SLPs (Clinical Fellows, Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPAs), and/or students as applicable).
• Observe clinical practice; provide feedback, mentorship, and competency-based support, with emphasis on AAC assessment, intervention, documentation, and ethical practice.
• Provide direct speech-language pathology and AAC services as a working clinical supervisor, modeling best practices.

Assessment and Intervention

• Conduct comprehensive assessments of individuals with communication disabilities to determine their communication and AAC needs.
• Ensure AAC and communication services, both direct and consultative, are clinically appropriate and individualized.
• Develop and coordinate implementation of individualized communication and AAC intervention plans tailored to the individual’s goals and needs.
• Collect and analyze data to monitor progress and guide clinical decision-making.

Training, Collaboration, and Consultation:

• Train individuals with communication disabilities, their families, caregivers, and educational teams in the use of AAC systems and devices and communication strategies and plans.
• Ensure that AAC systems and communication plans are integrated into daily routines and activities.

Documentation, Compliance, and Ethics

• Complete and review clinical documentation through clear and concise assessment reports that include findings, recommendations, and intervention plans.
• Document progress and modifications for the individual's AAC use and communication plans.
• Ensure supervised services meet billing and regulatory requirements.

AAC Technology, Alternative Access and Troubleshooting:

• Select, customize, and support AAC systems, application and alternative access methods (e.g., switch access, eye gaze) based on individual needs and preferences.
• Demonstrate AAC application knowledge such as TouchChat, Proloquo2Go, LAMP WFL, TD Snap, GoTalk Now, etc.
• Troubleshoot technical issues related to AAC devices, software, and accessories, and provide guidance on maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.

Advocacy and Education

• Advocate for individuals with communication disabilities to ensure they have access to appropriate AAC resources, communication, and services.
• Provide educational workshops and training sessions to professionals, families, and the community on AAC, communication, and AT.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) accredited university.
• Clinical Certificate of Competency from ASHA.
• Professional licensure as Speech-Language Pathologist in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
• Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) Certification (or able to sit for exam after a year of employment).
• Experience with evaluating and training with families and individuals with complex communication needs to use AAC.
• Experience working with individuals with swallowing needs preferred.
• Experience developing and writing individualized, measurable, and functional goals for clients.
• Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
• Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
• Must successfully pass background checks. Must have a valid driver’s license, safe driving record, automobile insurance, and access to a vehicle to be used as directed and when needed for transport.
