Position Summary
The Sports Medicine Physician provides comprehensive, age-appropriate ambulatory primary care, serving as an essential resource for all eligible students. This physician plays a vital role in clinical leadership, overseeing the care delivered by Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. They also provide focused specialty care for students presenting musculoskeletal injuries and complaints, as well as specialized consultations to primary care providers within the medical clinics. The clinic additionally provides primary care to NCAA Division 1 athletes at UGA and collaborates closely with the Athletic Department and the Athletic Trainer program to create an integrated care team for athletes. Physicians in this clinic function as team physicians.
Additional Requirements
UHC Minimum:
- Maintenance of board certification in an appropriate specialty such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.
- Current BLS Certification or attainment within 180 days of start.
- Certification of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.
UHC Preferred:
- Expertise in College Health is preferred.
- Greater than three years of active ambulatory care practice with progressive management and HR responsibility.
- Three years of experience as a clinical physician.
- Current DEA
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies:
- Clinical knowledge base that is primary care focused.
- Comfort with behavioral, travel and tropical medicine.
- Minor procedural skills.
- Communication skills, empathy, ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, acceptance and cultural competency.
- Familiarity with an electronic medical record, particularly skill with Point and Click Solutions' OpenSuite EHR.
- Proficiency or familiarity with Joint Commission accreditation.
- Proficiency with Office 365 and other software to include Word, Adobe, Excel, and Outlook.
Standing, typing, walking limited distances, moving from sitting to standing frequently, pushing/pulling, lifting, bending, squatting and kneeling as needed.

Patient Care
- Provides age-appropriate musculoskeletal and primary medical care; performing physical assessments, minor procedures, order and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, coordinate care and referrals.
- Documents encounters in a concise, timely, detailed, and informative manner using an electronic medical record.
- Serves in a consultative and clinical supervisory role for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants active in the clinics.
- Co-signs (assess care and decision making, ensure adequate documentation, and offer feedback where appropriate) entries in medical records by NP/PA staff.
Athletic Support
- Serves as a liaison with the Athletic Department.
- Participates in Athletic Department events as a representative of the UHC.
- Provides consultative musculoskeletal care support to UHC primary care providers.
- Contributes to teaching efforts.
Administrative and Other Duties
- Participates in process improvement.
- Attends and participates in committees and staff meetings.
- Obtains appropriate continuing education credits as a requirement in maintaining license and national certifications.
