Description
The University of Chicago Department of Pathology is now accepting applications for the Director-in-Training (DIT) position in Transplantation Immunobiology, starting July 1st, 2026. The selected candidate will hold a postdoctoral research appointment. This position provides comprehensive training in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics for up to four years, preparing trainees with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required for professional competence.

The ASHI- and CAP-accredited Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics Laboratory provides comprehensive support for both adult and pediatric transplant programs, including kidney, pancreas, islet, liver, heart, lung, and multiorgan transplantation, as well as hematopoietic cell transplantation. Our fellowship program is designed to train fellows for board certification by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) and for HLA Laboratory Director certification through the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications:
A Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.). Applicants who come from a pathology residency should have completed either a combined AP/CP residency or a CP residency.
A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in biological, clinical, or medical laboratory sciences. Relevant disciplines include immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, and genetics.
Must meet all CLIA regulations for HLA lab director degree requirements. If a candidate’s eligibility is based on a degree or coursework from a foreign university, it is strongly recommended that the official transcript be evaluated by an agency approved by ASHI.
A candidate who possesses a strong background in immunology, histocompatibility and immunogenetics is preferred. Technical experience in antibody testing, flow cytometry, cellular immunology, functional assays, molecular genetics, molecular immunology, and next-generation sequencing is highly desirable.
This position requires strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the capacity to manage multiple projects concurrently, set clear priorities, and maintain precise documentation.
