Job Summary
Morgan State University (Morgan) is seeking an Assistant Director for Auxiliary
Business Solutions (AD) to serve as a key member of the Business & Auxiliary
Services leadership team. The AD will provide strategic, financial, and operational
oversight for a broad portfolio of services that enhance the experiences of students,
faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors.
Reporting to the Director, Business & Auxiliary Services, the AD will oversee the
bookstore operation, which is outsourced to a contracted vendor. Additionally, the AD
will oversee mailroom and print shop operations and develop plans to expand product
and service offerings. The role requires a collaborative, customer-focused leader who
can balance operational efficiency, revenue diversification, and budget management
while fostering a welcoming, service-oriented environment and demonstrating a strong
commitment to operational excellence and customer service.
Job Duties
General Job responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
- Supervise staff, including assigning and supervising work, conducting performance evaluations, developing training materials, and conducting training.
- Develops and implements plans and strategies to accomplish goals for assigned areas. Work may involve evaluating programs, projects, processes, systems, service offerings, and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
- Serves as the primary liaison with third-party contractors and continually monitors and evaluates their performance against contract specifications and recommends appropriate remedial action as necessary.
Financial Oversight & Revenue Generation
- Works with the Director and unit leaders to establish operating goals, budgets, monitor costs, and implement strategies to reduce waste and improve operational efficiency.
- Identifies opportunities to generate additional revenue such as new programs, products, services, or partnerships.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with the leadership of colleges and departments to ensure services are aligned with overall institutional goals and student needs.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for university leadership and contract vendors. Communicate service updates, changes, and improvements in a timely manner.
Marketing & Promotion
- Collaborate with the contract vendor and the university community to develop marketing plans and promotions to ensure products and services are promoted through various channels.
Technology & Data Management
- Use data and analytics to assess usage, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. Make data-driven decisions to improve services and operations.
- Explore new technologies or approaches with third-party providers to provide efficient services and solutions.
Bookstore
- The AD's primary responsibilities involve overseeing day-to-day operations, coordinating between the university and the bookstore contractor, and ensuring that the store meets the needs of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors.
- Oversee inventory management with the contracted vendor to ensure that textbooks, supplies, and other materials are available. This includes working with faculty and/or representatives to ensure required textbooks and materials are ordered and available on time.
- Oversee sales performance, including monitoring trends and analyzing data to ensure the bookstore is operating efficiently and profitably.
- Oversee and elevate customer service operations, swiftly resolving escalations to guarantee a seamless experience.
Retail Operations
- Develop retail strategies by analyzing market trends and identifying new opportunities to enhance sales, enter new markets, increase customer engagement, and improve the overall experience for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors.
- Work with student organizations, colleges, and departments to tailor offerings that meet their needs during various school events.
Print Shop
- Oversee and collaborate with the print shop team to ensure efficient operations, promotion of services, pricing structure, and work to expand services within and outside the university.
- Market the print shop & services to the university community, ensuring that students, faculty, and staff are aware of available products and services.
Mailroom
- Oversee and collaborate with the mailroom team to ensure efficient operations and secure handling of mail, packages, mailbox rentals, etc.
- Oversee budget management, equipment purchases, and staffing.
- Work with USPS, postal couriers, and logistics companies to expand services and ensure Morgan receives competitive pricing.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Business or related business field from an accredited college or university is required.
Experience:
- At least 10+ years of retail management experience, such as a print shop, retail mailroom, or client-service operations that generate over $5 million in annual revenue.
- Experience managing point-of-sale systems, which include configuring software, maintaining hardware, ensuring PCI compliance, facilitating transactions, improving inventory management, analyzing sales trends, customer behavior, etc.
- Demonstrated history of managing retail or client-service environments generating over $5 million in annual revenue, including leading strategic growth initiatives, budget management, contract negotiations, developing new products and services, inventory control, marketing, operational planning, retail, and sales.
Other Preferences for Consideration
Preferences:
- A Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or related business field.
- 15+ years of experience in of retail management experience, such as a print shop, retail mailroom, or client-service operations.
- Experience working with a campus-based franchise in mailroom and print shop
operations at the assistant director level or higher. - Experience overseeing a campus-based third-party contractor in bookstore
operations at the assistant director level or higher. - Five or more years of leadership experience in auxiliary services at a university
or a comparable retail sector.
