Assistant News Director
WISH-TV is seeking an experienced, dynamic Assistant News Director to help lead the day-to-day operations of our newsroom.
This is a key leadership role for an accomplished journalist who is passionate about news, storytelling, innovation and developing people. The Assistant News Director will help drive daily content, guide coverage decisions and champion strong breaking news coverage across television and digital platforms.
The ideal candidate is an experienced newsroom leader with excellent news judgment and a passion for developing compelling stories. This person will work closely with reporters on story development while collaborating with producers to create distinctive, engaging newscasts that serve our audience.
The Assistant News Director must be a strong leader who can manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-pressure newsroom while remaining calm and focused. A digital-first, 24/7 mindset is essential, along with a willingness to embrace new technology and innovative ways of reaching our audience.
The Assistant News Director will work in close partnership with the News Director and will play an important role in mentoring, coaching and providing daily feedback to the newsroom staff.
Key Responsibilities
Help lead the day-to-day operations of the newsroom.
Work closely with the News Director to establish daily coverage priorities and long-term content strategies.
Drive breaking news coverage across on-air, digital and social platforms.
Guide reporters and producers in developing strong, compelling stories.
Work with producers to create distinctive and engaging newscasts.
Provide coaching, mentorship and constructive daily feedback to newsroom staff.
Foster a collaborative, accountable and creative newsroom culture.
Monitor developing news and make sound editorial decisions under deadline pressure.
Embrace a digital-first approach to news coverage and audience engagement.
Identify opportunities to use technology and new storytelling tools to enhance coverage.
Help lead and develop a large newsroom staff.
Adjust schedules and priorities as news demands change.
Participate in newsroom management and leadership responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum of 5 years of broadcast newsroom management experience.
Strong producing background with a demonstrated understanding of newscast execution.
Excellent news judgment and editorial decision-making skills.
Proven ability to lead, coach and motivate a large staff.
Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
Strategic approach to building content and developing innovative storytelling.
Strong understanding of digital and social news operations.
Passion for journalism, storytelling and serving the community.
Willingness to embrace emerging technology and new approaches to news delivery.
Flexibility to work varied schedules and be available for breaking news and coverage needs.
Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Communications, Journalism or a related field preferred.
