Position Summary
The High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director serves as a member of the building leadership team and supports the principal in creating a positive, safe, equitable, and high-achieving school environment. The primary focus of this role is instructional and operational leadership, including student support, supervision, school culture, and daily building management.
In addition, this position provides leadership and oversight for the school’s athletic programs, ensuring compliance, sportsmanship, student participation, and alignment with district goals and values.
This position requires a collaborative leader who builds strong relationships with students, staff, families, coaches, and the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assistant Principal Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership and School Improvement
Support district and school improvement efforts focused on student learning, strong instruction, and equitable outcomes.
Assist with staff supervision, evaluation, coaching, and professional growth conversations.
Promote high expectations for teaching, learning, and student achievement across classrooms and programs.
Support professional learning, PLCs, and collaborative teams connected to school goals and evidence of student learning.
Use data, classroom evidence, and student voice to identify needs, monitor progress, and inform decisions.
Culture, Belonging, and Student Support
Foster a safe, positive, and inclusive school climate where students and staff feel seen, valued, connected, and challenged.
Support behavior systems, restorative practices, attendance interventions, and discipline procedures that build accountability and belonging.
Build positive relationships with students and families and partner with them to support student success.
Collaborate with counselors, teachers, support staff, and community partners to strengthen student supports and interventions.
Advance equity-centered and culturally responsive practices that reduce barriers to participation and achievement.
Change Leadership and School Operations
Help lead change by building shared understanding, communicating the why, and supporting staff through implementation.
Assist with daily operations, supervision, master scheduling, testing coordination, student activities, and other building systems.
Coordinate safety procedures, emergency response, and crisis management in alignment with district expectations.
Maintain a visible, supportive presence at campus events and extracurricular activities.
Balance operational responsibilities with the larger goals of instruction, culture, and student support.
Athletic Director Responsibilities
Athletic Program Leadership
Coordinate and oversee the school’s interscholastic athletic programs.
Ensure compliance with WIAA regulations, district policies, and league requirements.
Promote sportsmanship, academic success, equity, and student participation.
Support hiring, supervision, and evaluation of coaches in collaboration with the principal.
Coordinate athletic schedules, transportation, facilities use, and event management.
Communication and Community Relations
Serve as a liaison among coaches, students, families, officials, league representatives, and the community.
Address athletic concerns and support effective communication with stakeholders.
Promote positive school and community engagement through athletics.
Program Management
Assist with athletic budgeting, purchasing, and inventory.
Ensure appropriate safety procedures and eligibility requirements are followed.
Coordinate athletic awards, recognition programs, and seasonal meetings.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Valid Washington State Principal Credential (or ability to obtain).
Successful experience in educational leadership or demonstrated leadership capacity.
Knowledge of secondary school operations, student support systems, and instructional leadership.
Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a high school administrator.
Experience working with athletic programs and extracurricular activities.
Knowledge of WIAA rules and athletic program management.
Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusive practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
Strong leadership, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
Knowledge of school safety, student discipline, and restorative practices.
Ability to support both academic and extracurricular programs.
Requirements
