Description
Chair, Department of Medicine
Carilion Clinic | Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
Roanoke, Virginia
If you’re a physician leader who wants to shape the future of academic medicine while making a meaningful impact on patient care, education, and research, this is a rare opportunity to lead one of Virginia’s most comprehensive and respected Departments of Medicine.
At Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM), you’ll step into a role where your voice, vision, and leadership truly matter. Carilion Clinic places a strong emphasis on physician leadership as a core part of how it delivers care and runs the organization utilizing the dyad model: a physician + administrator partnership. Physicians in leadership roles provide care and are strategic decision-makers. VTCSOM engages chairs in shared governance of the medical school and the dean’s leadership team to inform policy and strategic decision-making
Why This Role Stands Out
As Chair of the Department of Medicine, you’ll lead the largest department within Carilion Clinic and VTCSOM—home to 14 subspecialties and more than 320 providers—and help define its next chapter of growth and innovation. You’ll have the platform to influence clinical excellence, expand research, and shape the training of future physicians through a close partnership with Virginia Tech and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC.
The Chair’s academic leadership and management responsibilities include oversight of all departmental faculty activities and academic initiatives as shared priorities of Carilion Clinic (CC) and VTCSOM. The Chair promotes faculty success, research and scholarship, and excellence in the clinical learning environment to exceed accreditation standards and enhance the national reputation of VTCSOM (MD degree) and CC (graduate medical education).
This is more than an administrative role—it’s a chance to:
- Drive strategy across a broad, high-performing clinical enterprise
- Advance a thriving academic mission in education and research
- Build and mentor a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
- Innovate within an integrated, patient-centered care model
