This institute offers an unparalleled environment for hematologists seeking to advance patient care, basic, translational, and clinical science, and innovation at the intersection of hematology, thrombosis, vascular biology, and cardiovascular medicine. Physicians would have opportunities to participate in groundbreaking translational research, investigator-initiated clinical trials, and multi-disciplinary programs focused on thrombosis, hemostasis, sickle cell disease, pulmonary hypertension, cardio-oncology, and vascular complications of cancer and cancer therapies (together with UPMC Hillman Cancer, led by Dr. John C. Byrd, MD a practicing hematologist). Faculty benefit from exceptional research infrastructure, robust NIH-, foundation-, and private philanthropy-funded programs, a NIH-supported T32 post-doctoral training grant, a diverse referral population spanning Western Pennsylvania and beyond, and a culture that supports innovation, mentorship, and career development [vmi.pitt.edu].
The ideal candidate should demonstrate excellence in patient care and have a strong interest in working in an academic environment with exceptional opportunities for clinical practice, teaching and research. Opportunities for interdisciplinary and translational research collaboration and teaching at all levels of medical education are available. Additionally, support for competitive start-up packages to support early and mid-level
researchers exist for qualified individuals. Candidates must be ABIM eligible or certified in Hematology or Hematology-Oncology. The faculty member will be expected to participate in the teaching and training of Hematology and Medical Oncology fellows, residents, and medical students, as well as contribute to the Division's annual Scientific Conferences. The Division of Classical Hematology along with the Division of Hematology-Oncology has a combined fellowship program with a strong record of training fellows who have gone on to full-time academic positions, as well as leadership positions in Biotechnology companies.
Clinical activities will include attending the inpatient hematology consultation service, the outpatient non-malignant hematology clinic at UPMC and in the federally-funded Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania, which has access to multiple clinical resources as well as a vast array of diagnostic tools & cutting-edge laboratory studies.
Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with level of experience.
