The City of Adrian, MI (population: 21,000) is accepting applications for the position of Community Development Director. Adrian (adriancity.com) is a city of arts, parks, and culture and is the home of Adrian College. Adrian is proud of its historic downtown featuring shops, restaurants, and events. It is the Lenawee County seat and is located in close proximity to three major metropolitan areas – Toledo, Ann Arbor, and Detroit.
Under the general direction of the City Administrator, the Director organizes activities of the Community Development Department, including business attraction, planning and zoning administration, development review, construction inspection, rental housing inspection, code enforcement, and economic development services. Responsibilities include supervision of several full-time staff members, budget preparation, oversight of departmental activities, and attendance at various board and commission meetings. Knowledge of community planning, code enforcement, and economic development principles is preferred.
Requirements
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in public administration, planning, business administration, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of five years of directly related and progressively responsible experience in community and/or economic development, planning, zoning, or other related fields is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary, with the ability to convey departmental concepts in simple terms. The Director will be visible in the community and will provide presentations, recommendations, and updates to the City Commission and community stakeholders.
