About the Campaign
Fred Wellman is a Democrat running for Congress in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District, one of the most competitive congressional districts in the country. Fred is a 22-year Army veteran, West Point graduate, small-business owner, and longtime advocate for democracy and veterans.

Wellman for Missouri has built an energetic grassroots campaign supported by thousands of donors, volunteers, community leaders, veterans, labor, working families, and voters across the district. We are looking for a Field Director who can turn that excitement into a disciplined, effective voter-contact operation.

Position Overview
The Field Director will own the campaign’s field and voter-contact program from planning through execution. This person will be responsible for building and managing a districtwide operation that reaches voters through canvassing, phone banking, text banking, community events, early voting, and Election Day activities.

This is a hands-on leadership role. We need someone who communicates clearly, follows through, solves problems, and gets things done without waiting to be reminded. The right candidate will be a dependable team player who can create a plan, explain the plan, execute the plan, and keep the campaign informed about progress, challenges, and needs.

Our campaign is volunteer-heavy, with an excited and committed grassroots base. The Field Director must know how to welcome volunteers, keep them engaged, develop volunteer leaders, and turn enthusiasm into meaningful voter contact.

The Field Director reports directly to the Campaign Manager.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a comprehensive field plan, including voter-contact goals, target universes, turf strategy, volunteer recruitment, and weekly benchmarks.
• Organize and manage canvasses, phone banks, text banks, visibility events, and other voter-contact activities throughout Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District.
• Recruit, train, manage, and retain a large and diverse volunteer team.
• Identify and develop volunteer leaders who can host events, lead canvass launches, train new volunteers, and take ownership of local field activities.
• Build a volunteer culture that is welcoming, organized, appreciative, and focused on results.
• Maintain consistent personal contact with volunteers through calls, texts, emails, and 1:1 follow-up.
• Manage field staff, interns, fellows, and volunteer leaders as applicable.
• Own VAN/VoteBuilder administration, including cutting turf, creating phone and text lists, entering data, maintaining accurate records, and tracking voter-contact results.
• Provide the Campaign Manager with clear and timely updates on volunteer recruitment, voter-contact numbers, upcoming activities, challenges, staffing needs, and progress toward goals.
• Communicate proactively when plans change, goals are at risk, or additional resources are needed.
• Develop and execute the campaign’s early-vote, vote-by-mail, GOTV, poll-greeter, and Election Day operations.
• Coordinate field activities with campaign communications, digital, fundraising, and political operations.
• Build productive relationships with county Democratic committees, labor organizations, allied groups, elected officials, candidates, and community partners.
• Manage field materials, staging locations, literature distribution, yard-sign operations, volunteer supplies, and other field logistics.
• Manage the field budget responsibly and provide regular reporting on spending and program needs.
• Ensure that campaign activities comply with applicable election laws and campaign policies.
• Pitch in wherever needed. On a campaign, no task is beneath anyone.

Compensation and Details
Salary is commensurate with experience. The position is based in the St. Louis region and runs through the November 2026 general election.

Qualifications

• Previous campaign, organizing, advocacy, labor, or community-engagement experience.
• At least one cycle of significant field experience; leadership experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of VAN/VoteBuilder, including list building, turf cutting, data entry, and reporting.
• Experience recruiting, training, managing, and motivating volunteers.
• Demonstrated ability to set aggressive goals and build systems to meet them.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A track record of communicating progress, raising concerns early, and following through on commitments.
• Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects, locations, and deadlines simultaneously.
• Dependable, responsive, and accountable.
• Comfortable working independently while remaining collaborative and connected to the broader campaign team.
• A practical, solutions-oriented, get-shit-done attitude.
• Willingness to make calls, knock doors, move supplies, solve last-minute problems, and do whatever is reasonably necessary to support the campaign.
• Familiarity with St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Franklin County, Warren County, or similar suburban and rural-suburban districts is a plus but not necessary.
• Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel throughout the district.
• Availability to work evenings and weekends, particularly as Election Day approaches.
