A Rare Opportunity to Help Design the Future of Mental Health Care
Cowichan District Hospital is preparing to open a brand-new hospital in 2027. The new facility will include expanded psychiatric services featuring:
- A dedicated Psychiatric Emergency Zone embedded within the Emergency Department
- A Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- A 20-bed inpatient psychiatry unit
- Enhanced integration between hospital and community-based mental health services
Incoming psychiatrists will have the opportunity to contribute to the development, growth and innovation of psychiatric services within a modern, state-of-the-art healthcare campus.
The Opportunity
Psychiatrists in Cowichan work within a collaborative, multidisciplinary model alongside:
- Family Physicians and Hospitalists
- Emergency Physicians
- Mental Health and Substance Use teams
- Crisis Response Teams
- Nurse Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals
- Community-based support services
Clinical opportunities may include:
- Inpatient Psychiatry
- Community Mental Health & Substance Use Services
- Crisis Response and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
- Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Programs
- Early Psychosis Intervention Programs
- Substance Use Services
- Psychogeriatric Care

You'll provide care across a broad range of psychiatric presentations including:
- Mood Disorders
- Anxiety Disorders
- Psychotic Disorders
- Substance Use Disorders
- Personality Disorders
- Concurrent Disorders
- Cognitive and Neuropsychiatric Conditions

Recruitment Incentives (Eligible Permanent Positions)
Physicians may be eligible for additional remuneration through the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including:
- Recruitment Incentive of up to $10,000
- Relocation Assistance of up to $15,000
- Annual Flat Fee Payments
- Fee-for-Service Premiums
- Continuing Medical Education Funding
- Additional Rural Practice Incentives
Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC)
- Hold FRCPC certification or be FRCPC eligible in Psychiatry
- Demonstrate experience or interest in collaborative multidisciplinary care
Additional experience in geriatric psychiatry, leadership, teaching or program development is considered an asset.
