The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) is looking to appoint a medical practitioner trustee to join its Board.

The HFMA is the professional body for finance staff working in healthcare. For more than 75 years, we have supported our members and the wider healthcare community by promoting the highest standards in healthcare financial management, governance, education and professional development.

This is an important time for the health and care system, with increasing focus on value, productivity, quality, population health and patient outcomes. We are seeking a medical practitioner who can bring a clinical perspective to our Board discussions and help us strengthen the connection between clinical decision-making and healthcare finance.

As a trustee, you will work collectively with other Board members to set HFMA’s strategic direction, ensure strong governance, oversee performance and risk, and support the organisation in delivering its charitable aims. You do not need to be a finance professional, but you should have an interest in how good financial management can support better decisions, services and outcomes across healthcare.

We are particularly interested in hearing from registered medical practitioners, who understand the UK health and care system and can contribute constructively at board level. Experience of clinical leadership, system working, healthcare transformation, education, policy or governance would be welcome.

This is a voluntary trustee role. Trustees are expected to commit the time required to prepare for and attend Board meetings and to contribute to the HFMA’s work between meetings where appropriate.

Requirements

Essential

• Registered medical practitioner with current or recent licence to practice in the UK, or demonstrable equivalent senior clinical experience.
• Good understanding of the UK health and care system, including NHS structures, pressures and priorities.
• Ability to provide a clinical perspective on healthcare finance, value, productivity, quality, population health and patient outcomes. 
• Commitment to the HFMA’s charitable aims and to improving financial management and governance across healthcare.
• Understanding of, or willingness to learn, charity governance and trustee responsibilities.
• Sound judgement, independence of thought and ability to contribute constructively to collective Board decision-making.
• Ability to scrutinise strategy, performance, risk and assurance information at Board level.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with trustees, executives and stakeholders.
• Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
• Ability to serve as a trustee and commit the required time.

Desirable

• Experience in a senior clinical leadership, medical management or system leadership role.
• Experience working with or alongside NHS finance, commissioning, operational management or transformation teams.
• Understanding of healthcare financial management, resource allocation, productivity, cost improvement or value-based healthcare.
• Experience of governance in a charity, membership body, NHS organisation, professional body, regulator or public sector organisation.
• Experience of education, training, professional development or workforce development in healthcare.
• Insight into primary care, acute, mental health, community, integrated care or system-level working.
• Experience of influencing policy, developing guidance, contributing to national programmes or representing a professional viewpoint.
• Existing engagement with the HFMA, its networks, qualifications, events or policy work.
• Previous non-executive, advisory board, committee or trustee experience.
