DESCRIPTION & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

DESCRIPTION:

Under minimal supervision, the Clinic Assistant/Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) works with the Clinic Director to manage the Juneau Animal Rescue (JAR) shelter clinic. They will work in close cooperation with the Clinic Director, partner Veterinarian(s) and JAR staff to provide high quality shelter medicine, surgery, treatment of all animals in the care of JAR.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Clinic Assistant/LVT is responsible for working closely with the Clinic Director managing the JAR Clinic to provide quality medical care while meeting budgetary restrictions. They must have strong initiative in collaborating within a multi-departmental team environment, working closely with all staff to efficiently manage the animal population within the shelter and to provide veterinary services to internal and external customers. The primary function of the position will be performing administration, coordination, and oversight of the JAR Clinic alongside our Partner Veterinarian(s); however, the Clinic Assistant/LVT will be ready to step in and perform hands-on primary care duties across the department as needed, in order to meet goals and maintain a high level of productivity, especially during periods of peak workload. When the Clinic Director is not present, they will supervise unlicensed clinic assistants and kennel technicians while they work in the clinic.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Work closely with Clinic Director and Veterinarian(s) to evaluate quality of life and capacity for care, weighing euthanasia options as necessary.
Maintain appropriate medical records for all animals within the shelter.
Work with Clinic Director/Departmental Supervisors to perform daily inspection of shelter facilities to monitor the general health of shelter animals and to ensure that care and handling of animals is rendered in a safe, sanitary, and humane manner.
Perform basic clinical laboratory procedures, including obtaining samples as necessary and preparing medications as prescribed.
Assist the Clinic Director and Veterinarian(s) in treating patients; assist in medical or surgical procedures such as irrigating wounds, administering medication, cleansing wounds, and bandaging.
Perform the full range of “tableside” assistance to the practitioners, including restraining animals for examination and treatment.
Stock clinic with necessary supplies and assure that drugs and equipment are ready.
Work with Clinic Director to oversee and facilitate the administration of medications to in-house animals directly or indirectly through specially trained kennel technicians.
Be familiar with and enter proper charges and documentation in Point of Sale system.
Maintain Clinic inventory and accounting as necessary, including compiling inventory order list and logging inventory into animal database system.
Manage accounting with various vendors and ensure costs and price changes are updated on a consistent basis.
Work in partnership with Clinic Director and Departmental Supervisors to ensure that records are properly maintained including: animal intake, disposition, adoption, euthanasia, and spay and neuter of shelter animals.
Work closely with Clinic Director and Kennel Director to coordinate veterinary visits, visits with foster animals.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Hold current license as a veterinary technician and complete all requirements to obtain and maintain licensure in the State of Alaska or ability to be licensed in the state within 6 months of hire date.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform standard veterinary practices and procedures.
Proficiency in Windows, Word, Excel with knowledge of Point of Sale systems.
Supervisory experience, preferably in an animal-related field.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written with ability to resolve conflict professionally.
Ability to solve problems and multi-task with an attention to detail.
Demonstrated self-Initiative with ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Proven capability to professionally and compassionately address client’s needs while maintaining confidentiality.
Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays and special events, as needed and required.
Ability to interpret, explain, and ensure compliance with policies, procedures and regulations.
Knowledge of and/or ability to learn state and local laws, regulations, codes and ordinances relating to the proper treatment and sheltering of animals.
Proficiency in basic accounting skills and working within budgetary restrictions.
Demonstrates strong organizational, time management and administrative skills with the ability to set and meet deadlines while maintaining high productivity levels.
Must exhibit accountability, independent and sound judgment to identify problems, propose solutions and make decisions/recommendations to supervisors.
Ability to travel to training, engagements and educational events.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a shelter, office and occasional outdoor environment.
Ability to frequently climb, balance, bend, reach, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch and crawl.
Ability to stand for long periods, and perform moderately heavy physical labor. Work is subject to frequent interruption.
Exposure to zoonotic disease, cleaning agents and allergens.
Subject to loud/frequent noise. Subject to exposure of dangerous and fractious animals, animal bites and scratches.
Manage the mental and emotional stress that may accompany working in a shelter environment where animals are euthanized.
Ability to safely handle and restrain all types of domestic animals. Be able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
Must have no serious allergies to dogs, cats, rabbits, birds or ferrets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The Clinic Assistant/LVT must have at least 1 year supervisory experience in either the veterinary or animal welfare fields. State Veterinary Technician License (LVT) required with completion of Alaska State Veterinary Technician Licensure within 6 months of hiring. SUPERVISION: The Clinic Assistant/LVT reports to the Clinic Director, Deputy Director and the Executive Director. Supervisory responsibility includes secondary supervision of approximately 2 other staff members, and occasional supervision of up to 10 other staff members.
