Description
The mission of the Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is to provide comprehensive, high-quality, compassionate, and accessible health services to students at the University of Portland. The Physician Associate (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) serves as a primary healthcare provider within the University of Portland Health & Counseling Center (HCC), delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care that supports student health, wellness, and overall student success outcomes. This position provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for acute and chronic health conditions, while emphasizing preventive care, health education, and wellness promotion for a diverse student population.
Working as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, the PA/NP partners with HCC colleagues, campus departments, and community healthcare resources to ensure coordinated, compassionate, and student-centered care. The role includes clinical consultation and triage, management of electronic health records, development and implementation of clinical protocols, and participation in quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
The ideal candidate is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming healthcare environment, delivering exceptional clinical care, and contributing to the ongoing success and continuous improvement of the Health & Counseling Center’s services and operations. This position reports to the Director of the Health & Counseling Center.
As the HCC operates on an academic year when students are on campus, this position works a 10-month assignment period from August through May and receives the summer months of June and July off. The University total compensation package is offered for all 12 months.
The posted starting salary is based off the 10-month assignment period which is considered a .83 FTE. The University is able to commensurate the salary based off measurable years of relevant experience and licensure.
Requirements
Education & Experience
Required: Master’s degree in certified Nursing or Physician Associate program.
Required: Two or more years directly relevant professional experience in family or internal medicine practice.
Preferred: Experience in health services within a higher education institution.
Preferred: Experience precepting nurse practitioner students.
Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience
Certifications & Licenses
Required: License to practice as Nurse Practitioner or Physician Associate in the State of Oregon.
Required: National certification as Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner or Physician Associate.
Required: Dispensing license; DEA license; BLS.

- Knowledge of regulation practices and laws to protect and maintain client’s right to privacy and confidentiality, with the ability to comply with all legal regulations and professional standards in this area.
- Ability to independently perform age appropriate history and physical for a patient who usually is of college age.
- Knowledge of and ability to order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests, and prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments.
- Ability to implement appropriate interventions to support health, wellness, and student
success while continually monitoring outcomes of interventions. - Excellent judgment and effecitve in emergency, crisis, or otherwise serious situations.
