- Proposition 4 Coalition Director
Description
CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW
The amount of money in politics is outrageous, and it's corrupting our democracy. Public financing of campaigns would level the playing field, but public financing systems have been banned except in charter cities since 1988. Proposition 4, placed on the November 2026 ballot by the Legislature and Governor Newsom via SB 42, repeals that ban and allows any city, county, district, or the state to adopt public financing systems — such as small-dollar matching funds or democracy vouchers — with strict taxpayer safeguards. Prop 4 does not create or mandate any public financing program; it simply restores local control so qualified candidates can compete on the strength of their ideas rather than access to wealthy donors.
The campaign is backed by a broad and growing coalition of organizations spanning labor, civil rights, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, youth, environmental, consumer protection, faith, disability rights, seniors, women's, and more.
The Coalition Director will grow and steward this coalition through Election Day, ensuring partner organizations have the resources, information, and coordination they need to mobilize their members and drive Prop 4 to victory.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Grow the coalition by identifying, recruiting, and onboarding new organizational endorsers and partners across labor, civil rights, environmental, faith, reform, disability rights, seniors, women's, and business sectors.
- Prioritize deepening the coalition's diversity, with particular emphasis on recruiting and engaging BIPOC-, LGBTQ+-, youth-, and immigrant-led organizations to ensure the coalition reflects the full breadth of communities affected by the measure.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for coalition partners, building strong relationships with organizational leaders and their staff.
- Develop and disseminate toolkits, talking points, sample social content, and endorsement materials that equip partners to advocate effectively with their members and networks.
- Organize regular coalition calls, briefings, and convenings to align partners on strategy, messaging, and key moments in the campaign.
- Partner with the Grassroots Organizing Director to plan and staff in-person coalition events — including rallies, press events, fundraisers, and partner convenings — helping recruit attendees and ensure strong coalition turnout and visibility.
- Coordinate joint actions such as sign-on letters, op-eds, press events, and phone/text banks that mobilize coalition member bases.
- Track coalition engagement and partner commitments, and report progress and needs to the campaign's senior leadership.
- Work closely with the communications, field, and political teams to ensure coalition activity is integrated into the overall campaign plan.
- Represent the campaign at partner meetings, conferences, and other external convenings as needed.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in coalition building, campaign organizing, advocacy, or a related field, ideally including ballot measure or electoral campaigns.
- Existing relationships with California labor, progressive, or democracy reform organizations strongly preferred; relationships with BIPOC-, LGBTQ+-, youth-, or immigrant-led organizations a strong plus.
- Track record of managing multiple external partners and driving them toward shared action and deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate campaign strategy into partner-ready materials.
- Strong project management skills and comfort operating in a fast-paced, deadline-driven campaign environment.
- Familiarity with California's political landscape.
- Ability to travel within California as needed.
