The Department of Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)—a major academic teaching hospital and primary affiliate of Harvard Medical School (HMS)—invites applications for the position of Vice Chair of Education.
This visionary role will report to the Chair of Radiology, with close collaboration across departmental, institutional, and Harvard Medical School leadership. The Vice Chair of Education provides strategic direction and operational oversight for the department’s education mission across undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education. This role offers significant potential to develop innovative, high-impact strategies in educational advancement, along with the flexibility to shape the position.
The Vice Chair also serves as Director of the Herbert Gramm Education Academy, advancing excellence in teaching, educational scholarship, and faculty development, including growth of the Teaching and Educational Leadership Track at HMS.
Overview
The Vice Chair of Education leads a comprehensive educational enterprise supporting medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. The role balances strategic leadership, academic vision and operational oversight, with meaningful protected time and dedicated administrative infrastructure. Directly or through delegated leadership, responsibilities include:
Educational Leadership & Strategy
- Set and advance the Department’s educational vision across UME, GME, and CME
- Align educational initiatives with departmental, institutional, and HMS priorities
- Serve as a visible leader in radiology education at the institutional and national level
Program Oversight & Compliance
- Oversight of:
- HMS medical student education
- Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program
- Interventional Radiology Residency Program
- Seven clinical fellowship programs
- Ensure compliance with ACGME, GME, and institutional accreditation standards
- Supervise and support program directors and educational leadership
Support and promote a culture of trainee well-being to ensure both personal, professional development and career development.
Scholarship
- Expand faculty participation in the HMS Teaching and Educational Leadership Track
- Promote educational innovation, curriculum development, and scholarship
- Mentor faculty in teaching excellence, academic advancement, and leadership development
Operational & Financial Management
- Lead education operations, initiatives, and administrative workflows
- Oversee the education budget in partnership with Radiology Finance leadership
- Support departmental CME programming and educational revenue streams
Educational Community & Visibility
- Direct departmental Grand Rounds, named lectures, Graduation Day, and trainee awards
- Strengthen recruitment, branding, and national visibility of educational programs
- Represent Radiology education at BIDMC, HMS, and external forums
The Vice Chair of Education will help shape education during a transformative period, including BIDMC’s collaboration with DanaFarber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians to establish New England’s only freestanding adult inpatient cancer hospital, providing unique opportunities for interdisciplinary and oncologyfocused educational innovation.
Qualifications
- MD with board certification in Radiology
- Demonstrated success leading ACGMEaccredited educational programs
- Track record of educational innovation, leadership, and academic productivity
- Experience with accreditation, faculty development, and educational administration
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and strategic leadership skills
Candidates should be eligible for appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor academic rank at Harvard Medical School and appointment level will be commensurate with experience and published evidence of innovation and scholarly productivity.
Candidates with a rank of Instructor will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
